The mission of the Johnson Simulation Center is to enable and support the use of computer simulation to improve education and training, to promote economic development, and to enhance decision-making processes.

Beyond Virtual

Serious games deliver educational content through use of compelling, interesting game environments. Like commercial games, they harness natural competitiveness and keep the interest of players - or, in this case, learners. Our game simulation engine allows the creation of relevant, realistic 3-D environments tailored to the learning task or tasks at hand.

In each simulation, the player faces challenges related to the game's topic. The games, which are timed, provide a clear set of assignments and objectives that correspond to the field of study, with enough unpredictability to keep things interesting. Mini-games inside each main game also provide variation and engage the players, encouraging them to keep playing. Examples of serious games include:

Behind the Message. The player is a cub reporter assigned to write an article about a chemical spill in a small mid-western town. Players utilize professional, ethical, creative, and management skills.
